How to obtain and maintain the ENEC mark

How to obtain the ENEC mark

The procedure for obtaining the ENEC certification mark comprises three conditions:
Product type testing

The Certification Body tests the electrical safety of the products in accordance with the relevant European Standards (EN’s). Among other things, this entails verification of the protection against electric chock, water ingress, temperature control, mechanical strength and the leakage current. The Certification Body only grants the ENEC certification mark when it has been established that there is compliance with the relevant EN’s. The type test is carried out in the ENEC laboratory; however, the possibility exists for type testing to be conducted in the manufacturer’s premises based on Client Testing Facilities (E-CTFs)

Acceptance of the factory location

The factory location(s) must likewise conform to given quality criteria. This also includes ensuring that the products are subjected to systematic safety tests throughout the entire production process; this includes ‘Routine Tests’ and ‘Periodic Verification Tests’ (PVT) as specified in the Operation Document PD ENEC 303 and its applicable Annex. The quality system of the factory’s location must be evaluated in accordance with PD ENEC 308. For luminaires and associated components, additional evaluation according to EN ISO 9001 is carried out. However, compliance with EN ISO 9001 standard is not an absolute requirement but, with such compliance, the follow-up will be reduced to an absolute minimum.

ENEC Agreement between the Certification Body and the license holder

If both the type test and the quality level of the factory location meet the imposed criteria, an agreement pertaining to the use of the ENEC certification mark is concluded with the license holder. This Agreement covers the duration of the contract, market control, complaint procedures, costs, liability, etc. It is also essential for the manufacturer to make a commitment to inform the Certification Body prior to every modification of the certified products. The manufacturer confirms that it will only put certified products on the market that are consistent with the originally evaluated model. The product only receives the ENEC certification mark when it complies with all the prescribed requirements listed in conditions 1, 2, and 3.

How to maintain the ENEC mark

To maintain the ENEC mark, factory locations where ENEC certified products are manufactured undergo regular inspections. These inspections ensure that the products continue to meet the required standards and that safety critical tests are performed during production.

In addition, surveillance tests are conducted on products which are selected either from the factory or from the market. Manufacturers are required to inform the Certification Body of any modifications made to certified products. The Certification Body then evaluates these changes and determines whether additional tests are necessary to maintain the certification.
